Any suggestions for scenic roads thru Michigan from crossing over from Ontario, Canada into Port Huron, MI and north? Also sights to see along with campsite suggestions would be appreciated. |
Port Huron to Mackinaw
I recently crossed to Michigan from Port Huron. I was on the Blue Water Bridge (Sarnia/Port Huron)for about an hour in stop and go traffic moving a couple of car lengths at a time. Bridge surface was greasy in places (oil/anti-freeze). I hit the 5 p.m. rush hour and therefore would suggest an earlier crossing if possible. In Northwest Michigan try to ride the state route 119 between Harbor Springs and Cross Village it is a beautiful winding road with trees right to roads edge but keep alert for deer. Cross Village has a nice restaurant with indoor an outdoor seating.
Crossing from Ontario to Michigan
I would suggest useing the ferry from Sombra,Ont to Marine City,Mi. I've never waited long.
Ferry Crossing
A friend used the ferry on his return trip from New Youk a few weeks ago.
This is a quote from him: "I would suggest crossing on the ferry across from Marine City! We were the second group off and it took about 30 to 45 minutes to get through. If we had been first, that process would have been only 10 minutes at best. The ferry carries about 8 to 10 normal sized vehicles."
He didn't say what time of day he made the crossing.
crossing the border
Sunday crossings from Windsor to Detroit can be pretty bad (we waited 1.5 hours at the Ambassador bridge a few weeks ago). Ditto for the blue water bridge. The ferry from Sombra to marine city is a good bet. There is also a ferry from Walpole island a bit downriver from Sombra. REC is right about cross village...The bar/Restaurant is Leggs Inn and is full of handmade very interesting woodcarvings. Truly a must see.
