Ann Arbor, MiAnn Arbor, MiPosted February 19th, 2008 by gbeemer
I'll be coming from Ann Arbor, Mi. The plan right now is to go up across the Mackinac Bridge and through the U.P. I'll probably make it a 2 day trip and stop somewhere in the U.P. for the night and some pasties for dinner. |
I'm thinking of make ride
I'm thinking of make ride from Brooklyn, MI. From the UP originally so there is a place to crash for those looking for someone to ride with and a place to stop in Marquette County.

Making plans to attend
Me, my wife, my son and his wife are planning on riding up to the Rally. We will be leaving from Hastings MI. and riding up over the Big Mac. and across on either 2 or 28, stopping at night at a camp ground. We haven't set a departure date yet. Last summer we discovered a really good Pastie shop in Munising.

What are Pasties? I know
What are Pasties? I know what they are by my definition but probably shouldn't post that here since it's a family site.....
Pasties are...
Pasties are an all inclusive meal. They are sort of like Hot Pockets but made with real meat, potatoes, veggies. I believe they were the staple lunch for mine workers in the U.P. in days gone by. Anyway, they are delicious!
Pasties & U-P
I went to school at UWS in Superior WI and all the u-pers' moms would send them back with Frozen Pasties. We'd eat well when they came back...
I grew up in Philadelphia originally, and I would consider a pasty to be the illegitimate offspring of a Stomboli and a Meat Pot Pie. Good flakey tasty on the outside, meat & potatoes on the inside. A good compliment to Milwaukee's Best. Maybe its my experience... but the further you are from the Mackinaw Bridge toward Ironwood (south) or Ontanagon (north), the better the pasty. Wisconsin Pasties don't work. Tourist pasties (Mackinaw Bridge) suck.
Little known secret- Peterson Fisheries on the West Side of Bayfield WI. Whitefish Livers... Oh-boy! I think they will ship out cold storage.
Another better-known-little-known secret- South Shore Brewery in Ashland WI. Pretty good micro brew.
Little-known-Secret-too-many-know-about- Fitgers Brewery in Duluth. That (and Town Hall in Mlps) are easily the two most innovative micro-breweries in the upper midwest. Apricot-Wheat, yum.
And of course, my old hang out, the Anchor is Superior. Anchor Burger and the hand-pressed Fries! And don't piss off the waitress- she's naturally crabby and doesn't require further antagonization to provide you good chow & a great experience.
U-P: Great riding roads. Get away from Hwy 2 (boring...). go up past calumet, esp if the weather is nice. 48, 28 & 26 and the side roads. Porcupine Mtns, Copper Harbor, etc... Beautiful. Have a good trip!
Leaving from Jackson
Got my ticket, planning to camp, looking for riding buddies as this will be my very first long riding trip.
I can leave any time after the 19th, and my return time is flexible also.
